Crustaceans

Crustaceans are invertebrates that have a stiff exoskeleton and their limbs are in two parts.

There are around 52,000 species that include crabs, lobsters, shrimp, woodlice and barnacles. The largest crustacean is the japanese spider crab that grows to the size of a car.

Crustaceans can live in salt water (sea) and fresh water (estuaries, rivers, lakes and ponds). Some can live on land such as woodlice.

When in the sea, the young float around with plankton until they get large enough to live on the sea floor, when following the currents they are all classed together as Zoea.

The land crabs on Easter Island live in the mangrove forests and every year migrate to the coast to lay eggs, their are so many that they can completely cover the roads which means that cars can not do anything to avoid driving over them.
